![]() We are a martial arts group studying HEMA.We are not a theatrical or ‘stage-fighting’ group.The field of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) is undergoing a renaissance at present, and is rapidly gaining in popularity. We are not a re-enactment or LARP organization. The British Federation for Historical Swordplay is an alliance of groups across the UK, all of whom are engaged in the research, study and practice of historical fencing and European martial arts.We study medieval and renaissance sword forms, including longsword, rapier, dagger, spear, sword and buckler, sidesword, montante, wrestling, and other weapons. Our longsword curriculum is based on the techniques found in Fior dei Battaglia, a medieval combat manuscript written by Fiore di Liberi in 1409. LIHFS will also host seminars with other modern day masters to class from time to time as guest instructors to exchange ideas and share best practices. The Longsword, sometimes referred to the 'hand-and-a-half sword' is predominantly used in both hands, but can be used single handed. Through our ongoing research, LIHFS will bring to life the teachings of the historical masters via our proprietary Curriculum, which is one of the most thorough and authentic programs available to the modern student. It is our mission to study, recreate and practice the medieval German Kunst des Fechtens (the “Art of Fighting”), which was an incredibly complex and sophisticated martial arts system. We will also train with daggers, sword and bucklers, spear, wrestling and other period weapons. ![]() refers to the study and practise of fighting systems found throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. Medieval people faced the same problem we do: how to train with real steel swords, without hurting your training partners. ![]() One day, in the mid-12th Century, an unremarkable monk sat down in St Edmunds Abbey, Suffolk, and set pen to parchment. Our Sword & Buckler classes work entirely from the MS. Students will learn strategy and theory, solo drills, partnered exercises, and will fence with blunted steel and wooden long swords. No one knows how medieval knights really fought. Our curriculum is based on the manuscript of 14th century German Master Johannes Liechtenauer, and includes teachings and practical application through hands-on instruction from our senior instructors. LIHFS, which is short for the Long Island Historical Fencing Society, is a modern martial arts organization dedicated to studying, reconstructing and training with the German Longsword, the weapon central to Historical European Martial Arts (“HEMA”). ![]()
